What do I feed him?!

My bunny is soooo picky! He used to be just fine with the food we gave him, but he's so spoiled now! (He's about a year and a half now. I've had him since he was 3months old). He is very specific on the hay he will eat. He only eats soft hay, if it's too hard, he'll grab it from you and spit it out. This wouldn't be a problem, but I can't find a bag of hay that only has soft pieces. He's eating a brand of Timothy hay right now, and only about 1/5 of the bag has "acceptable" pieces. Same with his pellets. He'll eat the big pellets, but once you get to the bottom of the bag and they start getting smaller, he'll flip his whole bowl over so it falls through the cracks of his cage. I don't know what to do! I know he needs to eat, but I can't keep giving in to him either!
The only thing he wil eat with no problem is lettuce and yogurt treats (neither of which he gets very often). Any ideas of what to do??

Does he have toys? I'm not the bunny expert but mine needs lots of toys to keep him occupied. If he doesnt have toys, then he throws his food dish all over the cage - full or not. I also mix in carrots & celery in his food, feeding him twice a day. He goes crazy for the carrots then that sort of leads him to the pellet food.

Is there any chance your overfeeding him? Maybe he just doesnt like that brand of food & hay anymore?

I would not give him the lettue and treats for a while. try not giving him any more hay until he finishes all of the first bit. He will eat it all if he is hungry. I promise he will not starve! : ) Like telling him he cant have any dessert until he finishes his veggies.

Hi,

It could be that either the quality of rabbit pellets you are feeding is poor (like the stuff Walmart sells) or that the bag you're buying is so big that the feed is going stale before you get through the bag.

We raise rabbits for show and we feed Purina Fiber3. It's a 15% Protein feed. We also feed hay cubes that are a Timothy/Alfalfa mix.

Rabbits don't need a bunch of extra crap if you feed them a good pelleted feed as the main staple of their diet. Ocassionally we give a few Quaker Oats as a treat or to put a little weight on one. Oats are like candy to rabbits...they love them!

The most important thing to make sure they have is plenty of fresh WATER. A rabbit won't eat if it can't drink.

Rabbits need a lot of different nutrients. If you get a good balanced diet pellets, you can insert your rabbit with almost everything he needs. Good companies to consider include Nutrilux, Purina, Manna Pro, Nutrena, Oxbow and many others. You can find most of these flows to your local store.

My mother said her rabbits used to eat a lot of lettuce. Try lettuce or cabbage she says.

Do not feed a wild rabbit a substance that is not natural it may disrupt their habits.

They eat vegetables, hay, and grass.
well rabbits should not be fed lettuce as it gives the a bad stomach and can give them diarrhea
they eat fresh grass, hay and vegetables not so much vegetables but fruits which have fallen from trees. they do not simply eat any hay they will only eat the quality hay high in fiber. they also eat their own faces to ensure they get all of the goodness-out of their food, they will eat the same dropping up to five times!!
I've been told by a Vet that rabbits have a different digestive systems, bread will clog their stomachs, however {Patches) steals bread. She gets a variety of food such as bok choy, rabbit pellets, carrots, sweet/corn, celery, carrot leaves, she does like apple every now and then. grass, dock leaves and dandelion, along with puha and watercress. She drinks water alot when she is eating just pellets, we will give her fancy lettuce if we are having salad, she eats the cats food so we have started feeding them when we lock her in our bedroom and then remove their remaining food out of her reach. I let my daughter kill her fleas if she gets them and Patches doesn't mind, but if you no of a treatment that is safe let us know.

Corn, fresh or dried, is NOT safe for rabbits. The hull of corn kernels is composed of a complex polysaccharide (not cellulose and pectin, of which plant cell walls are more commonly composed, and which a rabbit can digest) which rabbits cannot digest. We know of more than one rabbit who suffered intestinal impactions because of the indigestible corn hulls. After emergency medical treatment, when the poor rabbits finally passed the corn, their fecal pellets were nearly solid corn hulls! Those rabbits were lucky.

Try cutting back on the fresh food as to much can upset there tummies. I have attacted a couple of sites with suggest fresh food they like. The pellets want be upsetting her tummy. I would also advice timothy hay . I always make sure my rabbits have food and i monitor there weight. It is important to rabbits that they have access to food and water all the time.
