I'm the director of Rabbit Fever, a documentary that follows a colorful collection of competitors as they strive to win the top title at the ARBA National Rabbit Convention - an event that draws more than 20,000 rabbits in one building. While adult members of the rabbit habit compete for BEST IN SHOW, the teenage enthusiasts quest for an even more coveted honor in the rabbit community – RABBIT KING and QUEEN!

I documented over 150 hours of footage, capturing the same rabbit enthusiasts at the American Rabbit Breeder’s Association National Convention over the course of 5 years. This film will mark the official world premiere into the background of the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) and the rabbit show industry.

I am thinking of holding a special work-in-progress screening at the National ARBA Convention in San Diego, CA later this year. Would any of you be interested in attending the screening? If there are enough people interested, we'll be able to rent out a theater for a special sneak preview.
For those interested in learning more about the movie, please visit http://www.rabbitfever.com and become a fan on Facebook for support!

Hello everyone on this attractive forum. It's good to be among like-minded people, especially after more than three decades of often literally hair-raising campaign work on behalf of our furry friends...in my case both hares AND rabbits of the wild variety.

I have been campaigning for all that time for the protection of these gentle creatures from cruelty...but especially from the so-called "sport" of hare coursing here in Ireland, in which rabbits as well as hares are used by those who think of setting greyhounds after these animals as fun and entertainment.

Hare coursing, which is now thankfully outlawed in Britain (and in Australia also) continues in Ireland. It basically involves capturing wild hares in the countryside and then forcing them to run from pairs of greyhounds...the aim being to see which greyhound will perform best in these races.

These races are held in large wired enclosures. Each hare is released from a little box at one end of the enclosure, and two competing dogs unleashed to pursue it. At the opposite end of the enclosure is an escape hatch. If the hare reaches this escape hatch before the dogs catch up with it, the animal has outwitted them...and survives to run again. But many hares fail to reach the escape and get mauled, injured or killed.

Since 1993, coursing greyhounds in Ireland have been muzzled...a change introduced in response to years of campaigning by animal protection people, including myself....muzzling means the hares cannot now be ripped apart as previously, but the greyhounds still kill or injure them. The hare is a brittle-boned creature and does not recover from injuries sustained.

Rabbits are used in pre-coursing training sessions for greyhounds, when the unfortunate creatures serve as live targets to make the dogs more aggressive and "rearing to go".

Campaigners on any issue will probably understand me when I tell you that taking up a cause like that of the hare and the rabbit can really take a toll on one's life. It certainly turned my life upsidedown. I was living and working a district where hare coursing fans were pretty powerful, and had plenty friends in high places...a situation campaigners in Britain probably experienced too I imagine down through the years.

Anyway, my employers were approached by coursing officials and urged to dismiss me from my job unless I ceased writing to the newspapers denouncing hare coursing. Under pressure, my employers asked me to quit my job.

The unfair dismissal followed months of severe bullying in the workplace, something other anti-coursing campaigners experienced also.

Other even more sinister challenges lay ahead, and all of them had to be faced and overcome. Whilst meeting much hostility from those who don't particularly care about the welfare of hares or rabbits (or enjoy misusing them) I also made lifelong friends "on the campaign trail".

I have written about my wildlife protection campaigning in a book called
Bad Hare Days Not just about the dark days, but also of the many happy times and the little triumphs along the way. Even the blackest clouds can sometimes have that silver lining! I am getting emails from around the world from campaigners who read the book and have trod the same rocky road (of picketing, lobbying, leafleting, etc) that hopefully leads to success.

I would encourage anyone campaigning for wildlife protection not to lose heart, and to remember that there are many others out there who have faced similar ups and downs...and if you feel any twinges of doubt as to whether it's all worth it, just look into the innocent eyes of the rabbit nearest to you. I know some will say I'm just being "emotional". So what? I say it's worth it.

I hope you're all having hoppy days. I look forward to when my own Bad Hare Days will be over and I can rejoice at the news that Ireland's hares and rabbits are at last protected from...let's face it...from people who ought to know better!
She looks big, but I can\'t really feel any individual babies inside. Would she build a nest if she were not pregnant? Could she be pregnant, but has miscarried and they\'re still in there? I don\'t know how to proceed.
Any advice would be MUCH appreciated.
I don\'t know if it was too noisey or she layed on them or they got stuck (they were a good size) but in any case we do have one happy healthy kit and I just checked and she was in the nest with it. So hopefully it will be a plump little butterball. I am alittle dissappointed but I am counting my blessings Laci is fine -and I have one to barg about!LOL

Just a few questions...what do you all do to have a successful meat rabbitry? Who do you sell the rabbits to and how many are necessary for it to be worth it?
Is it legal for local people to buy rabbits for comsumption or do they have to go thru some \"inspection\" to be sold as meat in the market?
Can they be sold to butcher shops to sell? Do yu take all the meat rabbits to auction?
Just really curious about this....

I am wanting to get my own tattoo kit so I can tattoo all my rabbits as well as my future bunnies. I\'d like your opinions on the type of tattoo kit you use and why you like or dislike a particular type and what your recommendations are as far as purchasing a kit.
We are leaning towards the plier type rather then the pen type. But which size would I need for this? Is it the 5/8\'s?
We have an ARBA judge which just lives down the road from us and I have emailed him asking if he could tattoo our rabbits but so far haven\'t heard back from him. That would by far be the easiest route to take but still I want to purchase my own tattooer and do this myself eventually.
THANKS in advance for your responses.

Hey All,

My hubby and I went to our first rabbit show this past Saturday. We loved it! One of the chocolate bunnies we sold in January was shown by it\'s owner. Although he didn\'t place, he had some nice remarks made about him by the judge, so I was happy with that. We spent the day intently watching, asking questions and browsing the for sale rabbits. We bought a nice red Mini Rex doe to help us with our Tri colored lines. You can see her on our website. Whimsical Warren
There is another show coming up on March 31st so we have been told, but we haven\'t been abole to find any info on it. As well as a show coming up the 14th of April we already have plans on attending. So I guess you could say the bug has bitten! Not sure if I will take any of our rabbits at this point. Mainly because they are usually going through such a heavy shed of their winter coat during that time, so I don\'t think they would be at their best at all. We\'ll see.
On a side note, I sold my rainbow litter of Mini Rex, all but the blue/fawn doe. I just love this rabbits coloring. She can be seen now on our rabbits page as well on the website. I have also bought a couple of blk/orange Tri bunnies recently. I have two more Tri babies to bring home from the breeder next month and then we will be done adding rabbits to our little rabbitry for a while. They are much lighter marked then the first two and I\'m really excited to be getting them! Anyhow, it has been a while since I stopped in and posted, wanted to say hi to everyone and let you know how much we are into the rabbit habit these days!

We had a 5 month old rabbit unexpectedy have babbies.(she was in a cage with her brother, we didn\'t know they could breed that early) Well they fell through the cage and 3 out of the 5 made it, so we put the babbies in the cage with her and I guess she didn\'t think they were hers so she tried to kill them. So we have started taking her out of the cage and holding her while the babies nurse.(so cute) My question is how often do we feed them?
By the way this is her first litter.
Thanks for your help,

Well, the bunnies did alright at the show yesterday - Best of Breed & Best Opposite in shows A & B. (No Best in Show or Reserve this time, but some very nice rabbits took those honors.) The same doe (Zodiac\'s Libra) took BOB both shows, with a Jr. buck (Zodiac\'s Photon) taking Best Opposite in show A and a Sr. buck (Zodiac\'s Takamizawa) taking Best Opposite in Show B. I also bought a new Mini Satin (like I really needed another one LOL.) He\'s a Broken Chinchilla Mini Satin and he\'s a beauty. I just had to have him!

Hi all, i\'m new here with my large french lop, Harry the house bunny.
He lives in the kitchen by night, has a litter box and comfy cats basket. In the day he follows me round the house and if i\'m gardening or it\'s nice he joins me in the garden.
He\'s been out playing in the garden all day today as it\'s been nice and eaten his way through the lawn, didn\'t stop munching for 4 hours, he\'s had his extra supplement to so imagine my surprise when I heard a \'splash\' and bang and Harry was on the kitchen worktop soaking wet and eating out of the fruit bowl?!
He\'d jumped right into the sink where there was water in the washing-up bowl, god knows how he made it up there? lol
I\'ll have to start watching what I leave out from now on.
Here\'s a pic of the naughty bun
