Hello. I have a 10 year old rabbit. I brought her to the vet yesterday because she is having some grooming problems. The vet had to give her anesthesia in order to work on her. He called me that afternoon to tell me I could pick her up, but he noticed that she was having some problems with her front paws - something I had not noticed that morning. He gave her a steriod shot figuring she may have arthritis. When I brought her home, she could not use her front paws at all. It is like her front paws are paralyzed. She is dragging herself and falls on her chin because she can\'t hold herself up. I know she is quite old, but I can\'t believe this would happen so fast. I contacted the vet\'s office and asked if the anesthesia could have caused this. I was told nothing they did would have caused the problem. I am bringing her back to the vet tomorrow, but I really believe something may have happened at the vet\'s office. Has anyone ever heard of a rabbit having serious effects after being given anesthesia? She had been moving around fine prior to her vet visit. I am hoping if it is anesthesia that she will recover. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have had a bad experience with anesthesia. Thank you.
My dog had trouble coming out of the anesthesia when he was neutered.we are cautioned too not use it unless its very necessary.rabbits are much more sensitive than dogs.i hope your bunny is ok.bluebird
You mentioned \"grooming problems\"...What were those?

Usually, when there is problems with anesthesia, the complications consist of difficulty getting the animal (or person) to come out of it or death itself. It really sounds like another issue to me. It could have happened during the procedure (whatever it was that was done for her). Or...it could be a coincidence.

10 years old is considered geriatric for a rabbit.

ok well try to find some small pvc pipes and make her a wheel chari type of thing for her front legs, its really easy i had to do this witha cat one time, you might have to add a harness to it but it will make it to where she is able to move around
She was having a problem grooming herself and everything was getting stuck in her fur under her rear legs. She had to be shaved and she had her nails clipped. Unfortunately she did not make it through the night. This all happened so fast and I did not recognize any health problems or walking problems prior to taking her to the vet. We believe she may have been handled a little too rough. Considering her age, that would be very traumatic for her. Also, she was given a shot of medication - something called Azium. The vet administered this thinking she may be arthritic.
Very sad story, and I\'m sorry.
lovemyangel -I am very sorry to hear about your rabbit. It was very good of you to consider taking her in the first place. Alot of people may not have. Considering her age it may have affected her system somehow.
I had taken my older rabbit who recently died at about age 6 or 7 (not really sure) He had broken his leg by jumping out of my arms. They gave him anethesia and he seemed to recover well -and lived for a few more years after that. I took our guinea pig who had a abcess and was only given a local -he passed away on the way home on my daughters lap. I think all animals are tramatized when anything like that happens and her age certainly didn\'t help. It may have just been too much for her. Sorry for your loss.
I am considering taking my 7 yr old dachshund to get his nails done -HE HATES IT!!! But they need to be done. I am afraid that something would happen -but I need to take the chance.
Thank you everyone. Good luck with your dachshund\'s nails. I think all dogs hate to have their nails cut.
Im soo sorry about your rabbit.bluebird
