That is neat that you live here in Indiana, it is always a pleasure to meet new people who have the same interests as we do as a family. I was not sure what all the chip involved? But if you are close enough to me I would be happy to tattoo your bunnies for you. I see it like us getting our ears pierced. A quick pinch and it is over. For pedigree purposes I always make sure my bunnies are tattooed. I do agree with Charlcie that for some of us that would be a bit costly to do the chipping thing. We sell some just as pets and I still do the tattoo in the ear for them. I could not imagine having to do a chip for everyone. Good luck deciding what you are going to do, and think about all the options. Tony Artist, Artist Rabbitry, South Bend, IN.

Registers at shows will tattoo your bunnies for you.i have seen some people with those new pens tattoing for a small fee.I like the pen tattoes very much. i dont have one yet.bluebird
Thanks Tony!! I wish that you guys did live closer to me, we\'re all the way down here an hour past Indy!!
Once I see this done, I might change my mind. Do you guys rub the ink in after you imprint? I think for me, that was the worst part. Of course rabbits don\'t scream either do they? They might make the difference.
I let me son know and he really didn\'t seem to mind about having to tattoo, he saw it as a new responsibility for him, he almost sounded as if he was excited to do it!! Shy
I think I had a stone 300, is that what you guys use? What catalog do you order it from and is the pen in the same catalog?
Tattooing a rabbit is extremely easy and I would prefer this over chips. Your son could learn very fast or like me -who only have one rabbit that needs to be done, have it done at the time of fair registration. They charge a dollar per tattoo and the ink is more like $3.00 a bottle. LOL That\'s me -Always looking for a bargain!
Even in your own rabbitry, that is the only way some people can quickly id there rabbit -otherwise they\'d always have to have a scanner in hand. My two rabbits look identical -it would drive me nuts if I couldn\'t see their #!
Personal use is great -my dogs are chipped. But I just can\'t see it becoming common practice in rabbits -not at $9. each. Heck, some rabbits aren\'t even worth that much! LOL And its not like you can take it out and use it on a better stock rabbit.
If it came right down to chipping -then yes, I would -but if given a choice -no I won\'t. Smile
my mom is a vet and i can tell you now that microchipping would be more painfull for rabbits than tattooing i have never had a rabbit scream while being tattoed with my expierence with them they hate shots more than tattooes

i also raise goats and they do scream and its cause they have thicker skin in there ears than rabbits do
I have used both the tattoo tongs and the battery operated tattoo pen. I prefer the tattoo pen by far. I found with the smaller breeds with smaller, thinner ears, the tong-type posed a greater risk of tearing the ear. (Rabbits do scream on occasion when being tattooed with this method, though it is one quick burst and is over when the tongs are released.) I have yet to hear a rabbit scream being tattooed with the pen.

If anyone is interested, a nice tattoo pen is available through Barbie Brown\'s bunnies. (You can find them elsewhere also.)

Yes after we tattoo them we rub black india ink in there ear. I usually use a q-tip so it is not so messy. I have never had one scream yet. It is over so quick some rabbits just sit there as if wondering what happened? Notice I said some! : ) We bought our set from a cage dealer down in Indiana called KD Cage co. And they are the clamp style. The tattoo pen seems really neat tho. When I get some extra money I may just invest in one? So far tho I have had no problems with the clamp style, and it has been almost 10 years! I do wish you the best. Tony
Thanks for the link, that\'s pretty reasonable!
I\'ve never tattooed that way, so it will be a new adventure. For the first round I\'ll have to do it while my son holds.
A lot of animals respond to the handler and how the handler goes about procedures. I was never a calm one with the tattoo\'s. I\'m more proficient with shots for one reason or another. The bun buns will probably be getting wormed after I run the fecals, so I\'ll find out shortly how they react to shots. I know Ivomec burns, do bunnies feel the same burning sensation?
Thanks Tony!! You guys have me convinced this isn\'t as bad as I think it is!! Guess I\'ll have to bite my bullet and lunge back into this!! Would be a heck of a lot cheaper on me!!
I use ivomec and I have yet to have a bunny act any different . When I first started giving them the injections they seemed like they were high and dizzy for a few seconds and then right back to normal. But to my knowledge none have reacted like they were really hurting. Rabbits are a fun and addictive hobby to get into. Keep us posted on things. Tony
