It\'s not as much the dark as it is a place to hide. Rabbits wouldn\'t survive long if they stretched out for a snooze in the open. Because Blaze is a non-domesticated cottontail (Sylvigus floridoanus ) the need to find a secure place in which to retire is highly developed, so you are doing the correct thing in making his quarters feel secure.
The need to hide is not so highly developed in our domestic rabbits. (Our domestic rabbits, by the way, are in an entirely different genus than our native species - Oryctolagus cuniculus.) Because domestic rabbits have been in that state for such a long time, pretty much any spot will do for a siesta.

When I had my Sylvigus floridoanus named Jacque -he enjoyed having a box to hide in -that kept him secure.

It\'s funny that or domestic rabbits are so different, from their wild \"cousins\" and even each other. Midnight prefers to sleep in her box, Honey sleeps on top of hers and Cloud just stretches out in the open. But that\'s what maes each of them special.
I gave my two rabbits a box to sleep and hide in, like a mini dog house but they would rather sleep behind the box. My guess is that they would feel trapped inside. I put some foot stools in their play yard and they love to lay under them. They scoop out some dirt so that they have a nice cool place to lay, but they alway make sure they can get out of their little dug outs from more than one direction. Where ever they stretch out in the yard, they alway prefer something over head, stools or some kind of brush. They will graze in the open for short periods of time, but they never rest in the open.
He acts so silly when I cover him at night he always comes to the side to nibble and lick my fingers and puts his head down for a scratch he even likes the dogs coming up to him not scared a bit of them guess he knows momma wont let the doggies get him and my cat completely ignores him not that I would ever let any of them play together same with my birds each species is kept in thier own play zone
One of my rabbits likes the dogs and will touch noses with them, but there is a fence in between them. Keep us updated on Blaze. It will be interesting to see if he becomes aggressive when he reaches maturity
Well, wild rabbits probably want a dark place to be in, though my pet rabbit loves light...and darkness I guess. He likes \'em both!
Blaze will be 5 months around the 25th of August and its funny to watch him intereact with everyone and everything I can put my haands in his cage and he wants rubs and love my kids do it and he wants to wrestle lol he runs up to thier hands and acts like hes boxing lol now put food in your hand and he\'s just as docile as can be to everyone except strangers I have had him since he was 3-5 days old and was the first person/thing he seen my boys have also handled him since those early days
Do you have any recent photos? It\'s fun to hear about Blaze\'s progress.
