my8 year old dAUGHTER\'S, three yr old dutch was released from the vet today after a stay over the weekend for an abcess on his right hind leg. sending a smear of his infection to see if its pasteurella to the lab. culture will take about 10 days. no previous symtoms . nuetured a month ago. we have 3 other bunnies all different species. very concerned . does anyone or has anyone experianced this? not looking forward to the results , as the vet is very sure he diagnosed this correctly. SadSadSad . we have already made arrangements to have all ethanized if tests come out positive. sad in pensacola florida
These are pet bunnies right? Why on earth would the vet recommend euthanizing all your rabbits??? Commercial breeders typically will euthanize or depopulate the herd if a SEVERE patuerella outbreak is present, but MOST rabbits have the bug - it is just most often dormant.

Euthanization certainly is not necessary. I don\'t recommend antibiotic therapy for treatment of Pastuerella. It really doesn\'t respond well to that type of therapy, but it can be dealt with. Please visit the Rabbit Medicine Chestand check out their herbal treatments for Pastuerella. I highly recommend it. I have a link to them from my Website: http://www.zodiacsatins.com/Links.html

Please check this out before you do anything rash.

Charlcie,
yes, they are pets. Thank you so much for responding to my post!!! I really appreciate your advice!!! None of our other three rabbits are showing any symtoms. I agree with you about NOT even trying the antibiotic theropy. I will not do anything rash . I want to get results back from culture of abcess before making any decision about this ONE rabbit. (im holding my breath that its not pasteureila) maybe , just maybe a rat bite him or another rabbit scratched/bit him. He is in the house until he heals or for gosh sakes not. I will check out your suggestions this evening. thanks again for helping me not worry so much . XO Big Hugs

I hope you dont have your rabbits put down.since they are pets and the others are not showing symptoms.bluebird
After reading this thread with me, my son said that our rabbits aren\'t pets, they\'re family. I\'m sure you and many others on this board feel the same way. Our thoughts are with you as you wait for the results.
still no results , waiting. This sweet lil male is named spot for the tiny dot of brown pigment on his nose. He has been with us the longest and is very special to the family. Spot is doing better and his abcess is healing. Thank You Everyone for your advice and prayers
