Hello!

I am thinking of purchasing 2 female rabbits from my local Agway - one of their employees breeds them. However, it would take much effort to convince my husband so I want to make sure I really want them beforehand Smile I have 2 boys, 3 and 1 yrs, but would not let them handle the bunnies until they are much older. I\'d like to keep them outside (that would be the major selling point for convincing my DH), but we live in coastal MA so I am not sure if that\'s ok or not. The rabbits are small but I don\'t know the breed. The woman at Agway said they wouldn\'t get much bigger than they currently are which is pretty small, IMO. I\'ve had an indoor cat before and grew up with dogs but I have had no experience with rabbits. How do they compare, care-wise, with a cat (if you can compare at all!). Am I just setting myself up for a lot of extra work? My eldest really liked them and spent 45 min just talking to them at the store! My husband doesn\'t want any indoor pets, so I was thinking that maybe this would be a good option. Thoughts? Thanks for any help!

hi,i dont think a rabbit is any more work than a cat.yes they maybe kept outside in hutches.beware of heat it killls more rabbits than the cold.I keep ice bottles in the cage when temperatures get above 80 degrees.bluebird
We have 7 rabbits now. Two inside and the rest outside in hutches. We live in Northern NJ and have pretty cold winters. They did fine. Since their hutches are in the barn, the summer isn\'t too bad. The bottom of the barn stays rather cool (compared to outside). As for the extra work, it\'s about the same as having a dog or cat. Good luck with whatever you decide.
I think that house rabbits are a lot more work than cats because you have to supervise their out of cage time and rabbit proof your house. I have outdoor rabbits and I think they are a lot of fun. I have a secure area for them to play in during the day so they get plenty of exercise. If they had to stay in the hutch all the time, I don\'t think I would enjoy them as much. I just got back from vacation and they stayed in a dog cage in a garage at a relative\'s home. When I put them back in their own fenced in area, they were so happy they were jumping and dancing!
