This is certainly not applicable to this Board, but many of you are so knowledgeable about animals in general, I was hoping someone could offer some help.

I have a cat who is 18 years old and lately he\'s been digging the hair off his lower back. It seems as if he has an itchy spot because his back will twitch and he\'ll try to lick it and end up digging the hair out. We\'ve taken him to the vet before and he has indicated that it could be allergies, but at his advanced age I don\'t want him to go through oral medication, etc. He has a sensitive stomach anyway.

My question is this: Is there anything topical I might have around the house that can relieve his itching that would be safe for him? Any thoughts are appreciated.
You might want to try Sulfadene. This is a gooey yellow liquid that seems to work well on several forms of dermatitis.

Good luck. Smile

Thank you! Now is this available at a pet store or pharmacy?
I have a dog with allergies and I used to have a guinea pig with allergies and I would give them both Benadryl. The dog gets the pill form and the pig would get the children\'s liquid form. I know there is now a topical Benadryl cream on the market, but I haven\'t tried it. My vet used to perscribe a cortizone cream for the hot spots on my dog. I found it just as effective to clean the hot spot with peroxide, then use a triple antibotic ointment like Neosporin.
We\'ve use Neosporin on our dogs and birds and have never had any problem with it. Can\'t say it was for allergies exactly, but after a tick bite, scratch from playing or broken wing weather. I imagine it would be just as good on a cat. Good luck with him.
I used to buy Sulfadene in the Pet Section of the grocery store, so it should be readily available.
