I have a Mini Lop buck adult, that appears to have snuffles. I would like to treat him with penicillin injections, but don\'t know the correct dosage to give. Can anyone tell me how much per pound body weight to give? Thanks for any help. Rita
Rita:
You can use an antibiotic, but they really aren\'t very effective. Baytril seems to be more effective than Penicillin, but (as are most antibiotics) can be hard on the rabbit\'s digestive system since the beneficial gut flora can be killed off as well as the harmful pasteurella organisms.
The dose ranges from 5-15 ml/2 lbs of weight. The dose is given IM every 12 hours for 5-7 days. A probiotic should be given orally to help keep an active gut flora flourishing.
Antibiotics tend to subdue the pasteurella infection, but do not eliminate it. It tends to recur frequently.
What I found to be MUCH more effective is
Systemajuv from the
Rabbit Medicine Chest. This natural herb-based formula helps build the rabbit\'s own natural defense mechanisms. I give 10 drops in 16 oz of water each day for 14 days. The sneezing stops usually within 24 hours. I had a doe that began to sneeze, showing a white discharge that was 2 weeks pregnant. I immediately gave her the Systemajuv and she hasn\'t sneezed since and this was back in September. She raised those babies with flying colors and has a week-old litter right now.
If you\'d like to find out more about Systemajuv, I put a link to the Rabbit Medicine Chest on my Website:
