Hi everyone, I\'m new to the board. I recently rescued a rabbit that had apparently been released to the wild. She is now living with me and we\'re spending a lot of time getting to know each other. I was thinking of making a \"den\" for axel inside her cage and i wondered what kind of wood would be safe for use.
Thanks
Dave
Whatever type of wood you use, Axel will chew it. You might want to cover the edges with metal stripping. Oak or Alder would be good. Pine, though cheap, isn\'t your best choice for an indoor rabbit as it does contain phenols which, with constant exposure can possibly cause health problems.

I don\'t recommend putting a bottom in your \"den\". A design that can simply be set in the cage is best. Axel may decide the \"den\" is the perfect \"bathroom\", then you\'ve got an added mess and sanitation problem. If Axel does decide to use it in this way, with no bottom, the urine and fecal pellets will simply fall through the wire to the dropping pan below.

By the way, Axel is a nice looking bunny. Smile

Thanks for the info Charlice. A bottomless \"den\" is exactly what I had in mind. I don\'t care if she chews on it as long as this doesn\'t hurt her in any way. By the way, Axel thanks you for the compliment. I think she\'s cute as well but I may be a little biased.
Thanks
Dave
