i found two fleas on Ryo!
how the world do you get rid of them?
is avantage, etc safe?
anyone tried that spray for rabbits by 8-1?
sorry for all the questions, but im just a little freaked out.
she must had gotten them from the dog. can rabbits have dog fleas? and
cant rabbits get myxomotosis from fleas?!
The first time my rabbits got flees, I used 8 in 1 and it didn\'t hurt them and it worked fine. The flees did come back again and the vet put them on a medication similar to avantage. They are on \"Revolution.\" I have heard that \"Frontline\" is harmful to rabbits, but I haven\'t heard anything about avantage. My rabbits are outside and I think they picked up flees in the grass. We have shrews in our yard and I think they carry flees. We also have a dog but she never has gotten flees. I think rabbits and cats catch flees easier than dogs.
Yes, fleas can transmit myxomatosis, though the most common vector is the mosquito. Do you live in CA or OR? These are the \"hotbed areas\" for the disease, though the incidence is pretty low at this time.

nope i am in southren kentucky.
i used the 8-1 flea spray but after what i read about there main ingrediant \"piperonyl butoxide\" i will NEVER use it again.
if i see anymore flees i have already talked to the vet about avantage.
Advantage & revolution are both considered safe for rabbits but neither are approved for rabbits. Frontline should never be used on rabbits.
You can also use Ivomec. 1% cattle injectable
What about that Hartz stuff you see in the pet store for cats? It works like Revolution, but I never tried it because I have a perscription for Revolution and I would rather go with a sure thing. If Hartz were safe and effective, I would use it because it is a fraction of the price. Is there a flee preventative that is approved for rabbits?
There are no \"approved\" flea control methods at this time for rabbits, however, there are several products that can be used safely. Advantage can be used, but as Bellsbunnies posted earlier - NEVER Frontline!

You can use a flea powder recommended for cats and kittens, however, be careful. Only use these products to treat active signs of infestation - not prophylactically. If used on a regular basis, toxins can build up that will cause the rabbit harm.

I use ivermectin injectable for beef cattle. I inject .1 (1/10) cc per pound that the rabbit weighs subcutaneously in the loose skin near the nape of the neck. What I like about ivermectin is one treatment and that\'s it. The effects last for several weeks and ivermectin not only kills external parasites, but internal parasites as well. For folks that are squeamish about needles, you can give the same dose orally, but I actually think the injection route is easier.

FYI, here are the signs that would indicate a toxic reaction...
  • shallow breathing
  • convulsions
  • cold or subnormal temperature
  • lethargy
  • no appetite
  • hair loss

Do you use that all year long or do you discontinue use after it freezes outside? Can you buy that at a farm supply store and do you need a perscription?
You can use Ivomec any time of year. I know some folks that give it routinely every 6 weeks, but I don\'t see the need unless you are seeing evidence of internal or external parasites. You can get it at most any feed supply store and no, a prescription isn\'t necessary. Smile

Thanks Charlcie. I am so glad you post at this site because you have been so helpful to me. I looked up ivermectin on the web and I can get it for a fraction of the price of Revolution. I usually don\'t give my rabbits anything for flees during the winter, but this winter they have acquired a new friend. There is a little cotton tail that likes to hang out by their hutch. Is this a reason for concern?
