Hi! I have been following these posts and they are so helpful! I breed Dwarf Hotot\'s and Mini Rex...and when I called the vet to see how I would get Ivermectin they told me that I had to come in to get a prescription for the oral dose (for each rabbit) and that for the injectable I would have to bring each rabbit in (and as a breeder that would NOT work!)...and that I COULD NOT get it and do it myself, which I am perfectly willing to do. They told me only Commercial rabbitries can get the injectable and they have to prove that the meat is for human consumption etc...any thoughts or sugesstions? This is very frustrating as one of my 7 week old babies has fur mites. I am relatively new breeder and havent run into fur mites yet...
Well, I hate to say it, but your vet is mistaken.

Ivomec injectable can be purchased at just about any feed store without a prescription. You can get the syringes and needles there as well.

Another even less costly alternative is to purchase from Jeffers Veterinary Supply. I used them for years when I raised swine. I routinely bought Ivomec for my pigs. They sell ivermectin in all its forms: paste and injectable. I have a friend who gives the ivermectin paste (for horses) to her cavies with no ill affects, but I personally have not given this to rabbits.

Anyway, you do not have to prove ANYTHING to buy Ivome, so I say - Go for It! Smile

Thanks! I finally asked other BC breeders on a yahoo group and found out its available near here! I do give Strongid (horse dewormer) to the buns and its great for worms but wont work for mites. Thanks for all of your help!
You\'re welcome. Smile

How much Strongid do you give your Bunny and can I give it to a 6 month old that weighs 1.75 lbs?

I have lots of it left since I just sold my horses.

Charlcie
Can you Please answer this also and tell me what you think?
Mongo and my 3 dogs all have fleas pretty bad!We plan on taking all the Pets to a Motel overnight this weekend and Fog the entire House with Bombs that will also kill any eggs.Sad
Well...Strongid won\'t do anything for fleas, I\'m afraid. I still like Ivermectin for internal & external parasites, however, if fleas are really the only problem, a simple cat flea powder will work just fine. It will be a LOT cheaper than Ivomec. If you get to the point where you have a number of rabbits, the cost of the Ivomec would be more justified. If your girls are with a 4-H club and there are several members with bunnies, the club might want to pool their resources and purchase a bottle for club use.

What kind of Kitty flea powder would you recommend as I\'ve read on other sites that it shouldn\'t be used At All, but I abasolutely trust your judgement and any advice you share.

Thank You!Smile
Mike:

I\'m not sure what sites you were on, but cat flea powder is generally safe for rabbits with fleas. Brand-wise, I couldn\'t tell you, but powders containing carbaryl as the active ingredient are preferred. One recommendation is NOT to treat prophylactively. In other words, only treat if you see evidence of fleas. Fleas dips are ALWAYS a no-no. Topical liquid treatments such as Advantage can be used, but NEVER use Frontline. A flea comb is an alternative to powders if you have the time. The rabbit will enjoy it, anyway. Smile

Okay, y\'all are way to ranchy for this gal! Please tell a city girl (I live in the country, or thought I did till I read these posts): I have a cat with a horrible infestation and just took in a rescued Standard Rex. We are having the cat dipped and the house bombed, but what do I do for my bun? You have mentioned a great product, but the feed stores here only care if you have cattle, they don\'t give a French damn about your pets. please advise if there is ANYTHING I can get at the chain pet stores. Thanks!!
Oh, forgot to mention, flea powders are illegal in FL - can\'t get \'em anywhere cuz too many rich Miami girls were poisoning their husbands with it LOL. So please, any other alternatives? You have no idea how in love I am with my bunny!! He\'s my very own Velveteen Rabbit and I want him to stay healthy, God willing!! Thanks for your help!
