i have recently been having bad luck on offering hay to Ryo. i through the hay feeder out (i have heard too many stories about rabbits getting there feet caught in it, etc) and now they hay is even more messy. i have tryed puting it in a small box, and somehow ryo manages to fit her body in it and go poopy in it.
i have seen alot of people put hay in the litter box. i have never thought it sounded like a good idea. they would be eating contaminated hay!? and you would have to change the hay everytime it got some pee or whatever on it. and on a tight budget i cant just go throwing away hay!
what do you guys think of hay in the litter box.
also any ideas on offering hay to Ryo
The hay feeder is still your best bet. I really haven\'t heard of any issues with rabbits getting their feet caught. The hay feeder should be mounted on the OUTSIDE of the cage. You can widen the openings in the 1 x 2 inch wire, by compressing every other one or so with pliers. The rabbit can then pull the hay right through the wires of the cage. This is certainly a MUCH better alternative than offering contaminated food.

all the hay feeders online and at the petstore are the kind that hang inside the cage. they are mostly from a brand called superpet. and i two people that i know of has had there rabbit injured by these hay feeders. i looked at some others online that was to go on the outside of the cage, but it looks messy. looks like hay would be falling from it outside of the cage. keep in mind that my rabbit is indoors and is only in a cage when we are sleeping or away. so even if i did get a hay feeder of any kind she will still need something for me to put hay in for out of the cage. she does better when she has hay 3 or 4 places in the house.
My rabbits won\'t use their litter boxes unless they are covered with hay. As long as hay racks are a problem, I think I would concentrate on finding cheaper hay. Hay by the bale is a fraction of the price that hay at the pet store is. Most boarding and riding stables won\'t mind selling a bale because they buy such huge quantities of it, and the quality is great. It is usually a blend of different grasses, but my vet tells me that any grass hay is good for rabbits. Alfalfa is not a grass hay. We have a farm and garden store in our area that will sell it for $6 a bale. I think my friend paid $3 a square bale for her horses. You can also cut your own grass to add to the hay, as long as it hasn\'t been treated with chemicals and you are carefull not to get any poisonous plants in with it. The grass that you have in your yard is just fine as long as it hasn\'t been contaminated by a gas mower or a dog or some other animal.
good idea, about going to a boarding or rideing stable.
thanks
