I rescued an abandoned dutch and discovered that he is shedding excessively and has a really bad diahriah. I have been been watching his intake of food and water and it seems to be consistant with my other rabbit. I also noticed that flies are easily attracted to his stools. Do you think maybe he has an infection or overly stress out???
I\'d recommend getting your bunny to the vet, but stress and/or coccidiosis are likely culprits. Treating the water with a sulfa-based medication can usually minimize a coccidiosis infection, allowing the rabbit to recover.
Until the diarrhea stops, I would consider feeding a good grass hay. When you resume pellets, mix them with 20% of uncooked, old-fashioned oatmeal, gradually reducing the amount of oats until you are feeding pellets alone. Also, no treats such as fruits and veggies until your rabbit is recovered. These foods tend not to be diarrhea-friendly.
Groom your rabbit daily to remove as much of the shedding fur as possible. The poor guy does not need the complication of a fur blockage which is a risk with animals that are shedding heavily.
Good luck.
