Hi,
I need help fast!!!My rex rabbit has an absess on her cheek(at least we think its an absess. We took her to the vet-at the time she had a runny nose also)Well its gotten bigger! Its now drooping down and today i noticed the bottem was rubbed raw from rubbing on the floor. However i know my bunny and she is\'nt in pain and eating normal-What should I do?To remove it it costs Lots of Money!!!!!HELP!BYE.

If the vet did indeed diagnose this as an abscess, you can drain it yourself (but it will be pretty \"ucky\"). An incision should be made low on the abscess and all the infectious material cleaned out. A syringe (no needle) of sterile saline solution would be good for flushing out the wound. I would then want to squirt an broad-spectram antibiotic in the wound. You should repeat this process everyday until the wound closes up and heals on its own.
Now, I must tell you that if the vet is given the opportunity to deal with the abscess, you will have a much better chance of a positive outcome. Good luck.

Thank you,Actualy i WAS wondering if its posible .hve you ever done it?has anyone?
Actually, yes. I\'ve treated abscesses on pigs, dogs, and bunnies. I used to work (many years ago) in a vet\'s office and I had a little farm going in CA and AZ. In AZ I lived WAY out in the middle of 40 acres, with no vets nearby. You had to make your vet visits count, so I did a lot of the routine stuff: wound treatment, vaccinations, castrations, etc., myself.
For MOST people, though, these things aren\'t very \"routine\" so if you have access to a good vet, I would always recommend that first.

So what happins if I dont remove it??I dont think I will because,The vets charge 5 arms and 6 legs and I CAN NOT remove it myself!!AGH!!
Also today I was taking her for a walk outside an her absess started draining!Goup was coming down it.We called the vet.Its ok and stuff.
Many times abscesses do burst and drain on their own, but you really need to make sure all the infectious material is removed. If you don\'t, the wound can close up again and trap the material inside. If this happens the abscess capsule can thicken into a wall and the foreign matter will be held inside, allowing the abscess to grow ever larger...sometimes killing the bunny in the process.
I know it is a disgusting, nasty operation, but for your bunny\'s sake, it needs to be done.

According to the vet you are never REALLY able to permenenty remove the absess even if the vet does the opperation
There are no guarantees. The outcome regarding complete removal depends on whether or not the abscess is encapsulated. If it is, then the vet can most assuredly remove it all. If the abscess is not encapsulated, the outcome is more uncertain.
The key goal though is to clean out the wound thouroughly. If the abscess bursts, but does not totally drain, it can become an ongoing cycle for the poor bunny, who may eventually succumb.
