I have a two month old flemish giant doe that is skin and bones. I\'ve had her about a week and noticed that she will not eat rabbit pellets, I\'ve tried Purina Rabbit Chow and Sprout brand. She will however eat hay and greens and seems lively and healthy otherwise. Any suggestions on how to give her a balanced diet? Will just hay, greens, and a mineral block do? I\'d like to see her gain some weight. (The buck I got with her is doing fine, eats plenty and is growing.)
She may be adjusting to her new surroundings - many rabbits go to new homes and go off feed until they feel more comfortroble with their new home. I would continue with the hay, discontinue the greens, keep a bowl of pellets in front of her (purina is a good brand) and maybe add some old fashioned oat meal in another bowl. Quaker brand oat meal is good - just make sure it is the old fashioned kind. Keep her diet to a minimum - the more options you give her, the pickier she will be. At this young age, she does not need the greens.
I forgot to add that if she doesn\'t seem to be putting on weight after a reasonable amount of time, you should get her wormed just to make sure they aren\'t causing any undue stress on her system.
Thanks, I\'ll do that. Just in case, what type of wormer is suggested and what dose? I never heard of worming rabbits before.
You can go to some of the rabbit supply places on the internet and they sell rabbit wormer as well as stuff to treat coccidiosis. Wazine is a brand of rabbit wormer and some just say Piperazine - rabbit wormer. I know some people who worm with horse paste and some who use wormer made for cats but I use the stuff that is labled specifically for rabbits.
