hi we r new rabbit owners and r females had a litter both of them they share the same nest. the babies r 5 days old and we r wondering when we r able to handle them does anyone know>???????? would appreciate all responses thanks anna
I find it odd that both does would share a next. You got lucky this time. Each pregnant doe should have her own cange and nest box. I look at and handle my babies from the day they are born. You need to check that every baby is still alive and thriving - remove any that have died. A dead baby left in the nest will cause it to foul, draw flies, and put the rest of the babies at risk. Distract the does with a piece of carrot or other favorite treat, remove the box, look at the babies, and put it back.
hi thanks i read not to touch them i am afraid if i do they the does will refuse to feed them i do look everyday i also try to clean the crate i actually have them in a pet carrier. right now i dont have a hutch. i need to know where i can find a cheap one. what is a nest box?? they have a nest in a the corner of the carrier?? thanks again feel free to email me anna
Anna, I feel that you need to do some very in depth research on the care and breeding of rabbits. 2 does living in a pet carrier with new babies is not a good environment for them to be living in. Just the buildup of ammonia from the lack of ventilation in these crates is going to cause you problems. Go to the internet and type in \'rabbit supplies\'. You will be able to find the nearest dealer to you and they will have all sorts of differant cages and a wide selection of supplies and prices. Each doe needs it\'s own space in which to bring up her babies. At the very least, go to an Earl May store of local PetCo or farm supply store - even Wal Mart. You need to do something differant right away - and it isn\'t going to be cheap.
