I am a total newbie bun owner. We have a little baby dutch bunny which we named Bailey for my girlfriends b-day. Anyways I feel we are very good parents , but I have found the key to providing a safe long lasting home for a pet is knowledge. With this said, I am wondering if female bunnies have cycles. We just want to be prepared and I found this site so I figured it might be a good place to inquire.
They do have cycles but I\'m not sure how often. I just had mine fixed. The vet said by doing so it will reduce the threat of endometriosis, mastitis and a bunch of other stuff too. Oh also behavioral issues too. I\'m fairly new to this too and like you think knowledge is the key.
I got a bunch of diffrent bunny books on Amazon.com (if you get the used ones they are pretty cheap and still in good condition) You might want to check in out- if you aer like me you read everything you can get your hands on!! Welcome to bunnyhood my friend!! Glad you are here! Have a great day!! LISA
Bailey\'s Dad-
You asked a very good question. No, female rabbits do not menstruate (bleed) when they ovulate.
I was honestly worried, I plan on having her fixed and the money wouldnt be an issue. I just dont want her to suffer at all, I also read somewhere that the female bunnies sometimes take out there stiches. Remember she is left alone for the day. Maybe on a friday would be better because I am home on the weekends. I just want to be prepared, ya know.
Bailey\'s Dad-
Yes, I think that having it done on Friday is a good idea. As she will need you to monitor her post op. I\'m glad you are so caring and are so concerned about her welfare!
I try to make something animal or not feel as comfortable as possible. Especially if its something that couldnt speak. I think it is kind of like having a sibling or even a child that may be deaf or mute, wouldnt you show extra attention to that one given that they ar at the deficit. I just try to imagine what they are thinking and make little mental notes of there behavior that way I can know for future what consoles them, where they enjoy being petted and so on (Animals that is, LOL). I\'ve got to tell you that I really enjoy this forum, it is nice to have other animal lovers to talk to.
So they don\'t menstrate but they do cycle right? I had mine done on a friday and it seemed to be a good thing because that night I checked her and she seemed a little cold to me so I took a blanket, very carefully picked her up and held her on my chest to warm her up. She appreciated it because she was purring the whole time! They don\'t want to move around too much the first couple of days or so, so don\'t let that suprise you. Over all I think its the right and responsible thing to do for them. (for me it was anyhow-maybe not for everyone tho) Lisa
in talking to the vet here, the best thing is to get them \"fixed\" or spayed if its female because if you don\'t they will start peeing all over your house evne if they are litter trained....this is their way of looking for a mate and calling one....
this \"pee\" if you will have a special odor to it that attracts male rabbits and if you do not get your female spayed she will do this EVERYWHERE ....and since scooter has FULL REIGN AND FREEDOM in our home and NO cage....its a necessity for us
so its best to get her spayed even if you KNOW she wont be with a male just becuase its healthier for her as well as healthier for you and your home

Thanks allot for the info. I do have a problem with her peeing everywhere. I usually notice this when she is on my lap. She has a special and now yellow pillow (just playing) she likes to lay on when she is being petted. Basically when I dont let her do something ex. jump off the pillow on to areas she is not allowed she will look at me funny and I see her tail go up and there you go... fresh pee. I always thought it was hilarious because I thought she was just saying she was frustrated with me in bunny talk LOL. Anyways I will get her fixed, but when should I get it done. When we got her from the pet store the woman said she was about 4-5 weeks old. We have had her for a month and maybe a little change so how much more time should I wait.
about 12 weeks you can but check with your vet, some vets will only do it at a certain age, others will do it sooner, as your vet what they prefer and it can be quite expensive
