We just moved into a new house about a month ago. The previous owner said there was an orphaned baby bunny living under the deck in the backyard that he had been leaving food for every day. Sure enough, the first morning I woke up in the new house, THERE HE WAS!! He looks to be about 7 inches long now and he is so cute! But he is wild and runs if I get too close. I\'ve been leaving carrots and lettuce for him on the deck in the morning and he takes them a runs! I would like to have him as a pet and train him. (assuming he is a HE) What\'s the best way to do this? I\'d like to capture him and take him to a vet and have him checked and give him his shots since he is wild.
thanks for any help.
Gina
I\'m afraid I have to say that I think he should remain a wild rabbit. He was born a wild rabbit and he obviously wants to be a wild rabbit or he would have allowed himself to be caught. As long as he is growing and thriving and happy, be grateful that he allows himself to be this little part of your life. If you are wanting a pet rabbit, there are plenty of domesticated rabbits of all colors and sizes that would make you a better pet than this guy.
He might not be orphaned. Wild bunnies are left alone at an early age and the mother comes to nurse them once a day. Wild rabbits don\'t make good pets because they are too nervous and can die if put in a cage. Just enjoy watching him and hope for the best.
its not fair to take something wild and try to train it to be captive....if you want to keep leaving treats, thats good and kind but be careful as the rabbit needs to learn to fend for itself and not become dependent on you since it is WILD ...

however if you try to capture it and make it tame, you could kill it because most pet rabbits are from a different species than wild ones and wild rabbits would not survive very well being captive...just like birds and other wild animals usually die once humans take them in...nothing is better for the wild than the outdoors and their natural instinct..
