Hi, I am considering becoming a first time rabbit owner. I am reading all the information I can get my hands on. Can you guys tell me how often you have to clean your rabbit cages? Everything I read just says often, but I would like a little more detail. For instance once a week or twice a week? And I heard that boys tend to spray. Is that true? So is a girl a better choice?
Thanks.
Hi,
When it comes to cage cleaning, I try to give mine a good cleaning once a week. During the week, I scoop out the litter boxes and do spot cleaning. I keep a spray bottle of water with a little vinegar in ti around and spray messes in the cage and wipe with a paper towel. How often you clean your cage will depend on how clean your rabbits are. In hot weather, keeping the cage cool and clean is a must.
Rabbits like to mark their territory and so either sex might leave poop around. I have a rabbit of each sex and my male doesn\'t spray, but I had him neutered. My female became very aggressive and when I had her spayed, her aggression went away. Spayed and neutered rabbits make better pets and so if you can afford to do so, it is a good investment. Females often die of uterine cancer at an early age if they are not altered. Like other animals, the personalities of rabbits vary form rabbit to rabbit and so I don\'t think there is a definite answer as to which sex makes a better pet. I have heard that male rabbits do spray and they also can become aggressive when they mature.
Good luck.
In my opinion, wire bottom cages with drop pans below the floor are the most hygenic and the best for rabbits. The wastes will drop down into the pan so that they are not sitting in it and you can then take a kitty litter scoop and scoop the wet or dirty places every day or every few days - whatever your schedual allows. Rabbits really do not mind the wire floors but if they bother you or your rabbit\'s feet are sensitive to the wire, you can place a resting mat (made for rabbit cages) in the cage for the rabbit to get off the wire. I have them in my cages and the rabbits still sit and sleep on the wire. Wire floors also have health benefits as rabbits can pick up coccidiosis from their wastes, which is an internal parasite so keeping your rabbit up out of it\'s wastes is beneficial. Wire floors also allow the air to circulate when it gets warm which keeps your rabbit cooler and keeps their hind ends dry. Wet hind ends attract flies which creat fly strike and maggots and maybe even shock and death for the rabbit. As I mentioned, it is just my opinion but wire floors are the best.
I had a wire bottom cage once and one of my rabbits had a problem with it. When I was at the hardware store, I noticed they sell the same wire with a plastic coating. Just wondered if anyone has ever used this coated wire as a cage bottom and how well it works?
my rabbit does not have a cage, she has free full reign of hte house... howeve ri clean her litter box every other day but when i did have rabbits in cages i cleaned the cages at least twice a week if not more...
rabbits are really CLEAN animals and they do not like dirty cages etc...as well as the fact that to much wetness will make them contract many diseases....
i would suggest at least twice a week and in the summer if you are in a hot climate 3 times a week if not more....
they would prefer every day but that is not always possible with your own busy life...
