Hi Everyone...It\'s Lorelei...for some reason I couldn\'t get back on with my old username...oh well...

My little Goblin (dwarf hotot sport) has been discovered to have malocclusion. So I did clip the bottom and I found someone to help me clip the top later today. He is the rabbit judge at county level -so he can be trusted. The vets wanted $35.+ depending on anesthesia could be more. My usual vet won\'t even touch this one.
Now...what are my options here? I can\'t ever breed him for fear of generating the trait into the next generation, right? He is young and will not be one until next July and I\'m not sure I want to clip his teeth for the next 7 or 8 years.
I can not show him because of this and also because the poor thing has no tail and is a sport buck.
Other options are tooth removal which I hear can be successfull and they tend to gain weight well and manage fine. Last option is culling.
I need opinions to help me decide his fate. *sigh*

Besides that...all is well...my NZ doe Laci is due Saturday and Lorelei is bred and due Easter weekend. Yippee for baby bunnies on Easter. Keep your fingers crossed -again.....
It was a realy long depressing winter and hopes of Spring are in the air.
I was beginning to wonder what happened to you. Glad to have you back. Unfortunately, I know nothing about your problem so I can\'t give any advice. I just wanted to say that I\'m glad you\'re back.
Welcome back! Smile

Removal of the teeth is usually successful as long as you realize two things: 1) Goblin is a pet bunny only and 2) because this is hereditary, if you own either parent, this can crop up in the future offspring.

Good luck.

You mean spending the money to have it done because he is just a pet, right? I don\'t know about that either! Sad
I got him from a breeder in Nebraska at the rabbit show I went to. He was \'just a rabbit\' and I knew that. Another problem is he seems susceptable to snuffles and has been having trouble -hence, keeping him in the house as a pet away from the others.
I did get his teeth done (not a great job but done) so that\'ll give me some thinking time, I s\'pose.
What would you do?
Thanx 4hmomof4...glad to be back I didn\'t intentionally plan on even being gone! LOL Smile
Hmmm...Snuffles adds another wrinkle. This is a tough decision. Removal of the teeth will be expensive, but in the long run will be cheaper than repeated visits to the vet for trimming teeth. Snuffles responds well to Systemajuv which can be obtained from the Rabbit Medicine Chest (I have a link to them on my Website.)

Don\'t be aghast, but I humanely put down rabbits with malocclusion as it is a hereditary abnormality. Fortunately, I haven\'t run into malocclusion in my line of Mini Satins , but I couldn\'t afford to allow it it to either.

No, I am not aghast! LOL I am a fairly reasonable person and if he is going to have these problems that may affect my others than I completely understand.
I never had a rabbit that showed constant symptoms of snuffles or this malacclusion...he is certainly an educational poster bunny for what not to buy at a rabbit show. But no one could know -as the teeth just grew and the snuffles just started snuffling!
I can\'t put him with the rest because of that -I can\'t take the chance.
If I did trim teeth I would do it myself I could not afford monthly visits unless the vet valued my decision to keep him going and did it on the side for free. (Highly doubt it!)
I think I understand my options, I do respect your honest advice and I\'ll just have to think it over.....Thank you! Smile
