A Quick question,
we have two dutch rabbits that we thought were both female low and behold we had the immaculate conception and had babies, we seperated the bunnies but our male must have bred her again before we found the kits. Kits are 4 weeks old and momma is about to give birth again, should the 4 week old kits be put into a different cage before she has the new babies?
Yes, although they are rather young to be seperated from the doe it\'s in the best interest of the new kits as the older kits will be jumping in and out of the nest and trampling the new kits. And as well, your doe may not have enough milk to go around to both litters resulting in starved kits.
Once you seperate them keep a close eye on the older kits to make sure they are eating and drinking well on their own.
My kits, by four weeks are usually little pigs at the food bowl, but each bunny is different so it\'s wise to keep a check on their weight for gains and not losses.
I start my bunnies off on a mixture of pellets and rolled oats mixed half & half. They have all done well on this. I also offer them hay.
Make sure they have a warm box to get in to, esp. if they are outside. If that\'s the case fill it with plenty of hay so they can burrow in and get warm snuggled together.
Good luck, let us know how everything goes.
Thank you so much for the speedy reply, our older kits are little pigs and are easily handled,so it will be easy to check for weight gain, as I was waiting momma had 2 new babies so we put theolder kits in a laundry basket while my hubby runs to super pet for a nother cage for them, they are inside for now because it was Dec when they were born so we brought them all in and put them in cages( mom and dad in seperate) we will wait until spring before we reintroduce them to their outside condo, this time insuring that they are seperated correctly.
