During the night on Saturday, Petey got a nail stuck in his cage and it ripped it off pretty good. We found it laying on the carpet outside his cage Sunday morning.

We are so fortunate because it obviously wasn\'t to the quick so there was no blood any where, and he didn\'t act a bit differently-- still played, run, etc.

This is a relatively new cage for Petey and was made with the organize-it cubes. Apparently where the door meets the grid, there must have been just enough space for his nail to get caught is the only thing we can figure. I\'m a bit nervous now about the overall design.

Has anyone else had this trouble at all?
Sorry to hear about Petey\'s accident. That has never happened with my rabbits, but I have heard of it happening with wire bottom cages if the rabbit\'s nails are not kept trimmed.
Yeah, we probably should trim his nails shorter than we do, but he has black nails and I am scared to death of going to deep.

I think we are going to redesign the cage so there is more room between the grids that meet so he shouldn\'t have any more problems, I hope!
Howdy! Peties friend

Glad to hear Petey is Ok,Big Grin I hate to hear of any Sweet Bunny getting hurt!

I have NIC houses Too(hate calling them Cages) and have never had any problems with them.Cool
Peties friend, if you could post some pictures, maybe we could help with some suggestions.

You might put a concrete patio block in his cage, (house, condo, bachelor pad or whatever) so that when he runs across it, it will help wear down his nails. Just make sure you check his feet to make sure that it isn\'t hurting his feet. This method worked great for my mix breed rabbit, but I had to pull the block out because it bothered my rex.
I will try to post some pics soon. I trimmed his nails last night and was a little more brave and trimmed closer than usual. It was a good trimming! Of course, he acted like I was torturing him or something! He hates it. How often do you trim?
My rex needs his nails trimmed about every four weeks but my mix can sometimes go as long as three months! I guess it just depends on the rabbit.
Maybe buy one of those plastic hock boards to keep some of the bottom covered? Then he wouldn\'t be right on the cage wire.
I usually clip mine every month -they need it now. Hubby just brought home a piece of carpet tile that the one company is installing in a new mall -I was so happy to see it but he did not know I needed it for that! Smile He did something good and didn\'t even know it! LOL Smile
I don\'t mind doing nails, you get used to it and they get used to that kind of attention. Even if you don\'t really clip them -just go through the motions to get him used to it! Smile
I have a couple of carpet mats in there now for warmth and to cover the bottom. I thought of buying those linoleum squares to cover the bottom. I think I remember someone suggesting that for NIC cubes on a website somewhere ....

I also think I need to get new clippers. The ones I have I purchased at a pet store and they seem chintzy. Where do you get good ones?
I like the clippers that are made for cats that look like little sissors with a knotch in them. I think they give me better control and I can see the nail better. Some of the bigger clippers are too wide for me to see what I am doing.
