I was shopping today (one of my favorite things to do beside hug bunnies!) and I was in a major pet store chain...they had a silly little bunny in there...not even sure what it was. It had sprouts of hair like a jersey but then smooth along its body and it was white and a light tan mixed. Anyway...it was advertised as a neutered rabbit for $99.99. That\'s right folks...a hundred bucks for a pet store. I wonder what they get at Easter for them...It was cute -but there was no way I\'d pay that for a rabbit I had no idea of its health or lineage.
Poor thing I hope he gets a good home.
I suppose they thought they could get more money for him because of the cost of the neuter. Did he come with a health certificate? The woman I got my rabbits from saw rabbits in a pet store for $40, and so when she got the opportunity to buy some rabbits from a farm for $2, she bought some of different breeds thinking she could cross breed them and make a lot of money. (Designer Rabbits?) I\'m glad I was able to talk her out of it.
I saw rabbits at a major pet store before for a hefty price (I don\'t remember how much) they were fixed rabbits, but to buy them I think you had to fill out an adoption application for a rabbit rescue organization.
From your description it sounds like a lionhead. You wont get rich selling rabbits too petstores.in my area they want only purebreds.i got offered $4 each.and they only buy them at Easter time.most stores wont take mixed breeds unless they are free.some of the larger chain stores have a place they buy all there animals from.bluebird
It could have been a lionhead -now that you mentioned it but I thought they were a dwarf breed. This rabbit was already bigger than a dwarf and I am assuming it was young with room to grow. I don\'t know if he had a health cert. - I couldn\'t get my mouth to closed long enough to form a sentence to ask! LOL
I guess it just depends on the demand. When I moved here to SD my first rabbit I bought was from Tractor Supply. She was $10.00 and a purebred New Zealand who won first place this year in her division! On her registration the judge\'s comment was \"gorgeous doe\".
When I was trying to find homes for my mixed breed babies -they were already 7 months old when Tractor Supply bought them from me for $5.00 each and they resold them for $10. They aren\'t picky...! LOL
Our local pet store sales Bunnies. I\'ve seen Mini Lops, Mini Rex, Dutch and Netherland Dwarfs there. The price is marked on the cages as $35 to $45 each depending on breed you purchase and states they are all pedigreed.
Around here, $99.00 would not even pay for a rabbits spay or neuter (last I checked) So here it would be a good deal if you were in the market for an altered rabbit. When I inquired about the cost of having a rabbit neutered I was quoted $130.00. I thought that was awfully high and opted to just keep him by himself.
Wow...$130.00...I never looked into that but I can\'t imagine it w ould be that high here. Yikes!
YES! My eyes about popped out of my head too at the price! lol
Yea their reasoning behind it is the surgery has to be performed by an \"Exotic\'s Vet\" so that\'s why it\'s higher priced. At least that\'s what the receptionist said about it when I questioned why it was so much higher then a cat or dog neuter.
Lorelei and N2rabbits
I don\'t know what neutering cost around my Part of Texas but I\'ve read in other Forums,That in California it can cost as Much as $320 to have a Bun Neutered an even more for a Spay. :0 OMG!
it doesn\'t cost that much my mom does it for like $40 for a buck the people price it for so much so they don\'t have to do it especially with does since there is a risk of them dying during the procedure most vets just don\'t want to spay/neutur a pet
and on the pet store thing my jaw dropped when i saw a rabbit in feeders supply for $150 and it was an easter special i couldn\'t believe it and one was a tort dutch that was so cute but couldn\'t of been more than 4 weeks old
what really makes me made is when pet store put rabbits in with guine pigs at pet store or have like 5 flemish giants cramed in a tiny cage i hate that so much
Around here a spay/neuter is at least $130, but a fixed rabbit at the humane society is only $40. I was tempted to drop my rabbit off at the shelter, and then get them back when they go on the adoption floor. LOL Those free rabbits sure did cost me a lot of money!
