I know the kits aren\'t to be weaned until 5 or 6 weeks, but I have a kit who seems ahead of the rest. These babies are probably 12 days old(unplanned pregnancy), and just started to open some of their eyes. How early should I let them out of the nest, or do I need to let them do it on their own? The kits are all okay just one of them is extra active and jumps around all the time. I\'ve also noticed that he\'s eaten some of the mommas droppings. I\'ve tried to clean the rest out. Should I see how he\'d do with pellets or is it too early?
When the kits are getting out of the nest on their own (about 2-3 weeks) is when we remove the nest box. While they are in the nest box still, it is normal for them to eat their mothers droppings and begin to nibble on some hay. If their are too many droppings or it is really wet in the nest box, then we put fresh shavings and hay inside. The kits will eventually begin to experiment with momma\'s food and at that time we begin to give free choice feed and hay. I wouldn\'t give pellets at this time. It\'s still a little too early.
At 12 days of age, doe\'s milk is all the kit really needs. The kits will nibble the pellets around 3 weeks of age when they come out of the box, gradually increasing the amount they eat until the little pigs clean the feeder (if you let them). Smile
